An exhibition by artist Phil Ordidge ARBSA. Phil’s current work explores the often magical interplay between land, sea and sky. He captures the evening sunlight, scattering across beaches and through trees, enhancing the often unnoticed textures and shadows. By using high horizons with little sky or brilliant sunlight juxtaposing intense shadows and textures he creates the mood.
Phil’s landscapes invite the viewer to step into the picture and experience the solitude of the location. With a palette of cool, soft colours he evokes a sense of peace and tranquillity whilst using stronger hues to generate dark, sultry shadows encapsulating the aura and atmosphere of the ever-changing daylight.
Free Entry: Tues - Sat 10am - 5pm; Sunday 12noon - 4pm

Vitor Azevedo launches a new exhibition on 4th May 2013 from 6pm. Everyone welcome at The Artsmith Gallery, Monk Street, Derby.
This will be the first time Vitor has had a solo exhibition in his new gallery space and is an opportunity to blend work old and new together for the first time to present a decade of personal reflection and take the time to consider his own ideas have changed and developed. There have been many influences throughout his stay in Derby that have stimulated his work and this illustrates how his life has transgressed through time and change. The exhibition is a personal peep hole into what happens on a daily basis, both good and bad.
Vitor's homeland is Portugal and the word "Saudade" expresses the feeling one has when close friends and family are missed. "She stood on the sand as she watched her love sail away on his boat, wondering when or if she will see him once more……"
"Saudade": the feeling of missing something you love while knowing that its likelihood of return is unknowable and entirely left to fate. Undoubtedly valuable in our effort to understand such a beautiful, sweeping and culturally significant word is its cultural, rather than etymological, origin. It is very telling that saudade came from such a maritime culture as the Golden Age Portuguese. Imagine the wives and children of the sailors who leave and are at sea for long, mysterious periods of time. Sailors’ families were perhaps the first to feel real saudade, not knowing if their loved one would ever return, but also being proud of their spirit and accomplishments.
